How to make the most of Dry January

fun activities to do after hours when you’re not drinking

Ah January, a month that fills many with dread. The Christmas lights have come down, the mornings are still dark and there always seems to be biting chill in the air.

We know it can be hard to think of things to do to get you out of the house this month, so to help you out, we’ve pulled together a list of exhibitions, events and offers happening in January, which you can go to even if you’re trying to stay off the booze. The list includes free non-alcoholic cocktails in the best bars in Manchester and London, a thought-provoking exhibition at the Royal Academy, plus a sober night out in one of Soho’s hottest nightclubs.

Here are a few of our recommended fun activities to make the most of Dry January and get you out the house after hours when you’re not drinking.

I. Future Proof

If you’re feeling as though you need a night out this month but don’t want to break Dry January, we’re throwing a party at one of London’s hottest nightclubs in the heart of Soho with Sober & Social on the 23rd January. Join us! It promises to be a memorable night that will challenge your perceptions of how to party.

Expect exceptional shows alongside music by the legendary DJ Fat Tony, plus bespoke Seedlip and Æcorn cocktails.

II. Eco-visionaries at the Royal Academy

It’s heart breaking to see the effect of human activity on the environment and tough to know how to help, but this exhibition at the RA shines a light on the architects, artists and designers who are responding to some of the most urgent ecological issues facing the planet with innovative, eye-opening solutions.

The exhibition stays open until 10am on Friday evenings.

III. Starling murmurations

One of the most-loved wildlife spectacles can be enjoyed in January. At dusk, Starlings in their tens of thousands fill the skies in a murmuration, a flying flock of Starlings, swirling back and forth in a mesmerising pattern that seems to take on a life of its own.

The Wildlife Trust can recommend some of the best places in the UK to see Starling murmurations

IV. Visit a botanic garden greenhouse

We love plants at Seedlip so naturally one of our favourite things to do in January, when there isn’t much to look at in the garden, is to head to some of UK’s amazing botanic gardens and visit the greenhouses that house amazing tropical specimens. Some of our favourites include:

The Palm House at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew View

Rainforest Biome at The Eden Project in Cornwall View

The Kibble Palace at Glasgow Botanic Gardens View

V. Garden Museum workshops

Seedlip is sponsoring the Overwinter program at the Garden Museum, which starts this month. Workshops and events are taking place each week until the end of March and we’re hosting a couple of cocktail-making masterclasses.
